This will be the first "design + computation" event hosted by the chicago computation group that will highlight the state of computational + performative design in education. A short presentation from each speaker will be given highlighting their academic research and studios that engage the role of computational design thinking followed up by an engaging panel discussion.//about the speakers
Tristan d’Estree Sterk, AIA is a faculty member in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and founder of The Office for Robotic Architectural Media & The Bureau for Responsive Architecture, a small technology office that develops new construction systems and components for buildings that alter the ways in which buildings perform, act and operate. In particular the office is recognized for developing structural shape change technologies that alter the way that buildings use energy. The office’s mission is to develop the knowledge, systems and state-of-the-art products that support tomorrow’s building construction sector while enabling people to craft more responsive connections between construction systems, design, users and the natural environment. In 2011 Tristan was awarded an AIA Chicago award of design excellence for unbuilt work with special recognition for the project: Prairie House – House for a Fashion Pattern Maker and Fiber Artist, and Dubin Family award for Young Architect of the Year.
Jordan Kanter has practiced as an architectural designer and academic since 2000, working in San Francisco, LA, Beijing, and Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from MIT and his Masters from SCI_Arc. As a Senior Designer at the Beijing-based office MAD, he oversaw the design of the Harbin Opera House, the Taichung Convention Center, and the interior design of the Ordos Museum. He has lectured and taught design at Tsinghua University and Tianjin University in China, and is currently teaching studios and computation courses at the College of Architecture at IIT. His research explores the ways urban and natural systems interact and can be enhanced at multiple scales, from urban objects to regional networks.
